It’s not yet clear how CBD helps with hair growth, but research suggests it may interact with certain Cannabiz endocannabinoid receptors (the endocannabinoid system operates receptors and enzymes throughout the body) to reduce inflammation and promote a healthy environment for hair growth.
The hair follicle is the part of the hair under the skin, while the hair shaft is the part outside of the skin that we can see. “In the hair follicle, it is postulated that CBD blocks [the CB1 receptor], resulting in hair shaft elongation [or growth],” says Brian Toy, M.D., attending dermatologist at Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, California.
Additionally, CBD may also prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle by desensitizing the TRPV1 receptor, which detects noxious heat. This desensitization delays the hair follicle from shrinking and promotes hair growth during the growth phase of the hair cycle.
Furthermore, notes Craig Henderson, founder and CEO of Extract Labs, a CBD company, “CBD has been shown to improve blood circulation, which can help deliver nutrients to hair follicles more efficiently.”
